It is only towards the find yourself this starts to break down, however the smack-right up finale rescues it from the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you can wisely dialogued, it’ll have zero great difficulty within the life off its extremely unappealing name.» [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin told you «The movie movements in the a fast speed, the newest conversation was slick and you can characterisations fundamentally active. Richard Brody on the The new Yorker listed «Which terse and you may tight movie noir try considering the new romantic and you may professional disputes of the term character, the new violent genius (starred because of the Knob Powell) at the rear of an elegant unlawful casino. The newest film’s journalist and you will manager, Robert Rossen, creates an excellent multidimensional chess video game, for mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a great scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) did from the gambling enterprise and you may dated a good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic software, the fresh new cast’s suavely managed gestures regarding like and you can risk, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will smartly assertive pictures (and his governmental conscience) get this pugnacious yet intricate spectacle an invisible antique of genre.» [ 10 ]

Photo have motion and you will anticipation, and you can particular small joins out of jokes to add taste. Expert activities by the Penis Powell, just like the a betting home overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, as the a police inspector, as well as in the score . Although the area employs a familiar pattern, the newest characterizations is actually fresh therefore the activities good enough in order to overbalance. Dialog was terse and topical, steering clear of the psychological, phoney reach. Uncommon cam bases come-along occasionally to help you heighten focus and you will temporarily stop the attention. Good teamplay of the Robert Rossen, doubling because the manager-scripter, and Milton Holmes, totally new creator and user music producer, including supports making this a softer development.» [ 11 ]

Its primarily an issue of viewing Mr. Powell undergo his paces stylishly when you find yourself a huge cast of stars and you can actresses promote your vintage assistance. Evelyn Keyes performs the favorable little woman just who brings about the latest finest in him and you may Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and you will slinky vixen exactly who becomes him on the jams. Thomas Gomez was oily since villain and Lee J. Cobb does an alternative ready concert tour due to the fact a tired police inspector whom finally closes the actual situation. A great deal of sipping and smoking is performed of the the alarmed.» [ several ]
